“Shawn and I met in high school in 2002,” Carol shared. From the very beginning, their story was unique. Carol asked Shawn to visit a haunted forest organized by her and the football team, but he didn’t show. When she confronted him, he confessed he thought she was joking. Determined to make it up to her, Shawn planned a private haunted house the very next evening.
“The students running it knew my name and shouted it as we went through,” Carol recalled. “It was sweet that he went through so much for me.” Their official first date followed soon after—going trick-or-treating together on Halloween. For them, this holiday holds special significance, marking the start of their relationship.
Weathering Life’s Challenges
Carol and Shawn’s love has endured the test of time. They’ve faced challenges together, including the loss of Carol’s mother in 2003 and long-distance separations during college. Shawn attended Adrian College, while Carol studied at Central Michigan University. Later, Shawn relocated to Traverse City for a year to work with the Department of Natural Resources.
Despite the miles, their bond only grew stronger. As Carol says, “We are each other’s first loves, and last.”
